Transitioning from a student into a professional is not an easy task. I made a lot of rookie mistakes when I started my career. I'm here to tell you all about my mistakes so you don't make them when you enter the Corporate World!
Know that this is not a self-help book. This book does not offer get-rich-quick schemes or reveal the secrets to instant success. Rather, it tells you how to navigate through the first few years of professional life; how to meander through the endless back alleys of job hunting; how to get ahead without getting in over your head; and how to react when you do fuck things up.
This is not about winning, Charlie Sheen style, but don’t assume this a lesson in mediocrity either. Rather, it is a book about survival. Because before we learn to win; before we learn to succeed, we must first learn how to survive. Before we can surf all seven seas, we must first learn how to doggy paddle.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Shilpi's Doggy Paddle. Her advice is valuable, but moreover the chances that you'll find yourself bursting out with laughter intermittently is pretty high, which is always nice when reading a book. I highly recommend you read it if you're a student, in between jobs, or trying to get ahead in your career in your current role. Even if you aren't one of those, it's a light, fun read that anyone would enjoy. That being said, here are my pros and cons.
Cons first, to end on a high note:
- The book is somewhat geared towards people in a consulting or IT/tech role, or who are looking for those sorts of roles. If you are say, in biotech, a librarian or a carpenter, the actual advice may only be partially useful to you.
- Some thoughts and chapters are haphazardly located. Her thought-process, while brilliant, does often quickly jump focus so you need to keep up. There isn't a sense of smooth continuity. This however does add to the comic appeal of her narration, so perhaps its not a con at all.
Pros, because I do highly recommend you read it:
- It is FUNNY. Shilpi knows how to use sarcasm and exaggeration in a lethal combination. She does this throughout her blog as well, and it is hilarious. Her anecdotes are personal and add a great dimension.
- Her career advice is great. If you follow it, chances are you'll land the interview at least.
- While it could be called a 'self-help' book, it does NOT feel like one. It's not heavy, does not preach, and can be read within a couple hours.
I definitely recommend reading Doggy Paddle!

Doggy Paddle Transitioning from the Undergraduate Pond to the Seas of Corporate America eBook Shilpi Chakrabarti Reviews
Where was this book in 2006 when I graduated college?! I feel like the lessons learned here would have saved me 2.5 years of aimless wandering in corporate America.
I wish I had read this book before starting medical school...or for that matter, before starting my residency! I had many flashbacks to my own experiences while reading this book. The anecdotes were laugh-out-loud hilarious and the insights and advice were down-to-earth and refreshing. This book is a must read for anyone starting off their career in business, medicine, engineering, or [insert your passion]. Thanks for a great read! I look forward to the next book!
Hilarious book with some really great insight on developing your career. Being only 2 years out of college, I realize that I'm not alone with so many of my experiences! Highly recommend this book to recent grads, but anyone who has been in corporate America will love and appreciate it. This book will guarantee to make you laugh out loud many times! Shilpi's stories and delivery is amazing and she mixes it in with some really great tips that everyone can use no matter where they are in their career.
I heard about this book through a friend, read the preface, bought the book on my and finished reading it - all in about an 2 hours' time. Having made (or I should say, still making) the school-to-work transition over the past year and a half, a lot of her advice was spot-on. I never really read self-help books, so I enjoyed the fact that this felt more like talking to a colleague.
Even if you think you know all this, it is still worth reading for the humor. A strong recommend!
Initially I didn't expect much from this book, as I don't from most self help books, which generally have a tendency to drone on in monotonous fashion about how one needs to have the right attitude and follow a certain set of steps to achieve success. This book doesn't promise success, but rather explains, in clear and succinct form, the many trials and tribulations that a young adult transitioning from college to corporate America may face, and how best to be prepared to face them. While the primary focus of this books seems to be directed towards helping recent college grads and college seniors, I think it is applicable to anyone in corporate America who doesn't feel like they are getting enough out of their career. Ms. Chakrabarti focuses on all the nuances of the workplace that generally go overlooked, but if tweaked could have a major impact on one's satisfaction with their career. I would also like to add that many of her personal stories about her experiences were quite entertaining, making this both an informative and fun book to read.
